TEXT
Don’t fly this morning / There’s a cold fog on the runway
And you won’t find anything at the end of the lights.
You see nothing / where the runways meet
Don’t clutch your bag / Don’t taxi towards the void.
There’s a daughter’s graduation / A wife’s promotion
There’s a mother, a husband / Don’t claw at the seat
Taxiing into the dark / The sky breaks open
A scream is trapped in the throat
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you go
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you leave
If I only knew beforehand.
If I only knew beforehand / There was coffee to sip slowly
A budding smile / A caress of the face
A glance to keep you from walking through the door.
There was a word I wanted to tell you / The silence to listen to
A secret to tell you / A promise tucked away in a jacket pocket
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you go
How can I tell you / That it would have better not to leave?
That it would have been better to call? / Notify, postpone.
How can I tell you why/ You shouldn’t go?
That there was time for the luggage / The ticket, the meeting?
Don’t fly tonight / Give me a last caress.
At night I always dream of /Those seconds with dread in the pit of your stomach
Sometimes I count the meters / of your careening off-course
Of your fear / Sometimes I dream of
Your terrified face
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you go
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you leave
If I only knew beforehand.
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you go
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you leave
If I only knew beforehand.
There was a word I wanted to tell you / The silence to listen to
A secret to tell you / A promise tucked away in a jacket pocket
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you go
If I only knew beforehand / I wouldn’t have let you leave
If I only knew beforehand.
